Biography
Louis XIV was born on September 5, 1638 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. He was the ruler of France from May 14, 1643 - September 1, 1715. His reign of 72 years is the longest by any European ruler. Louis's parents were rulers as well, before Louis XIV. His father, Louis XIII, ruled France, and his mother, Anne, ruled Austria. Louis had a wife named Maria Theresa and she was the queen of Spain. He also had six children but only the oldest of the children survived. Louis XIV ruled though three major wars, The Franco- Dutch War, War of the League of Augsburg, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Louis was interested in food and literature. Louis established a palace on May 6th, 1682 that is known as the Versailles Palace. As he was getting older, Louis had gained some many new lands that he made France a dominant power. On September 1st, 1715, in the Palace of Versailles, Louis died. He died from gangrene which is the death of tissue throughout the body.
